When Janet Jackson became a music free agent in 1991, she signed a record contract that was out of control.

On March 11, 1991, Janet Jackson inked a $50 million record contract with Virgin Records, making her the highest paid female entertainer. The deal came on the heels of Janet’s Grammy Award winning Rhythm Nation 1814 album. After the release and success of the LP Janet had fulfilled her contractual obligations to A&M Records. Virgin Records honcho Richard Branson jumped at the opportunity to make Ms. Jackson the center-piece of his entertainment empire.

The first release on the label was her fifth studio album, janet., which spawned hit singles like “That’s the Way Love Goes”—winner of the 1994 Grammy Award for Best R&B Song, “If”, “Because of Love”, “You Want This”, and “Any Time, Any Place.”
