Rick James: Happy Birthday!
R&B/soul music would not be the same without the timeless contributions of one, Rick James. Let’s give it up to the “Super Freak” on his birthday.
R&B great Rick James ( née James Ambrose Johnson Jr.,) was born on February 1, 1948 in Buffalo, New York. The eccentric singer/songwriter started his career in the 1960’s as a member of the R&B band the Mynah Birds. He also wrote and produced tunes, under an assumed name, for Motown acts like Smokey Robinson and The Spinners. James finally broke through in 1978 with his smash single “You and I,” which was featured on his debut solo album Come Get It!. His classic ode to ode to marijuana, “Mary Jane,” was also featured on the LP.
In 1981, James released the concept album, Street Songs,” which featured some of his most popular songs, “Super Freak,” “Give It To Me Baby,” and his stirring duet with Teena Marie “Fire And Desire.” James became a mentor to Marie, who possesed one of the most potent voices of her generation. James also helped launch the careers of 80’s R&B group, Mary Jane Girls.
Though his music was being sampled by many artists, including MC Hammer using James’ “Super Freak” for the foundation of his hit record “U Can’t Touch This,” during the 90’s James struggled with personal issues and faded from the public spotlight. However, in 2003 a skit on “Chappelle’s Show” brought him back into public eye. Comedian Dave Chappelle playing the role of Rick James’ in a skit that recalled outlandish stories of James’ escapades in the 80’s, gave birth to ubiquitous catchphrase “I’m Rick James, Bitch.”
Sadly, Rick James died on August 6, 2004 of various health conditions.
