The Temptations: As Big As It Gets
The Temptations recorded some of the most memorable soul tunes of the 1970’s, but none bigger than the era-defining classic, “Papa Was A Rolling Stone.”
On December 2, 1972 The Temptations soul classic “Papa Was A Rolling Stone” reached number #1 on Billboards pop charts. The single, which was originally recorded in 1971 by another Motown group The Undisputed Truth, became an instant hit for the Temptations. Despite being 12 minutes long, DJs still played the entire version on radio. The Temptations would snag three Grammy Awards in 1973 for the song.
